“Wastewater for smarter societies” session at Aqua Circular Conference |
Wastewater can act as a reusable resource as well as a vector for energy and materials to be extracted, treated, stored and reused. Water Smart Industrial Symbiosis (WSIS), as a form of circular economy, recognises the key role water/wastewater plays within a dynamic socio-economic and business-oriented industrial ecosystem. This session was organised to explain the concept of WSIS as applied in ULTIMATE and demonstrate in two case studies in Italy and Denmark how this approach is being implemented to achieve circularity. |

Circular Economy at IWA Copenhagen: Experiences and reflections |
IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition: a mouthful, but what a crazy experience! Full of enthusiasm, and curious as to what the upcoming week would bring, on early Saturday morning, 10 September, I got on a train in Utrecht with Copenhagen as my ultimate destination. A truly inspiring week in which I participated in my first, big international congress covering topics on the entire water cycle. |

NextGen concludes after 4 years |
NextGen concludes after a great 4-year journey to develop the Water Circular Economy. NextGen has challenged embedded thinking and practices in the water sector by embracing circular economy principles and technological innovation beyond current approaches that target incremental improvements in water, resource, and energy efficiency. Curious what the main results and key messages are? |

Applying the NEXOGENESIS Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus governance approach: Update from the three field visits |
Lacking consideration for water, energy, food, and ecosystems (WEFE) interconnections and constraints in policy could hamper economic development and resource security. NEXOGENESIS is developing an artificial intelligence-based tool and a nexus governance approach to support stakeholders in the co-creation and implementation of WEFE-integrated policies. The ambition is for stakeholders in the project case study regions to identify an agreed-upon set of WEFE-integrated policies and possibly secure commitment to implementation through a stakeholder agreement. |

Working towards climate adaptation and mitigation pathways in the Netherlands |
The ability to prepare for, adjust to and recover or possibly even benefit from changes – described as ‘resilience’ – is vital for the long-term socio-economic, ecological, and human (physical and mental) health of communities. IMPETUS is combining scientific data and digital tools in a way that communities can interact with while they work together to explore their best options and make decisions that help them adjust to climate change. KWR hosted IMPETUS project partners Nelen & Schuurmans and WEI to discuss progress in the Atlantic Demo Site towards climate adaptation and mitigation pathways. |

Water and Climate Coalition Leaders: Action Plan for Integrated Water and Climate Agenda |
Water and Climate Coalition Leaders have endorsed an action plan to achieve greater integration between the global water and climate agenda. The Action Plan comes in response to a call for more urgent actions towards mitigating, adapting and minimising climate related water impacts, which emphasises an integrated water and climate approach with international support to improve water data and information, to support partnerships in implementation and to recognise the need to protect water resources (e.g., glaciers). |
